Sunday 16 November Ancestral and popular Sumo Sumo is a one-to-one sport where agility and balance are required, it is a competitive contact sport. Two wrestlers, «rikishi» in Japanese, have to push each other out of a «dohyo», a circular ring, or to make the other one touch the ground with a part of his body except the soles of the feet. Sumo includes a large number of ritual elements, and that’s why a «rikishi» has to respect many important rules laid down by the Sumo Association, such as his alimentation and his dress code. Sumo is the national sport in Japan, his story started in the eighth century as many similar forms of competition in Greece, Russia, China and Korea. At that time, Sumo was a sort of entertainment for the emperor’s court during banquets. The original wrestlers were probably Samurais who needed to find an alternative form of income. Today, Sumo knows an unprecedented popularity in Japan and is spreading rapidly throughout the world, particularly in the United States. Sunday 9 November The nine-year-old driver On Monday the first of November 2008, a little boy aged of 9 driving the family car until he was arrested by the cops. He told them that he was going to his grandmother’s house. It’s a very exceptional event which surely happens in lot of developing countries but rarely in the developed countries like Japan or France. When the police tried to know how he had learnt how to drive, he answered that “he had learnt from his father’s driving and at games arcades”. Fortunately, the boy didn’t cause any accident. The officers were informed by a passer-by of the situation in the morning. He called them because he had seen a car going down a street in Yoro, in the south of Japan with nobody at the wheel. This incident was not supernatural as the boy is small: 135 centimeters. The cops let the little boy return home but they told his parents to look after their car and their child. Il leur a dit qu’il rejoignait la maison de sa grand-mère. C’est un événement exceptionnel qui peut se produire sûrement dans les pays en voie de développement mais très rarement dans les pays développés comme le Japon ou la France. Quand les policiers ont essayé de savoir comment l’enfant avait appris à conduire, il a simplement répondu qu’ «il avait appris en regardant son père conduire et dans les galeries de jeux». Heureusement, le garçon n’a pas provoqué d’accident. Les policiers ont été informés de cet incident par un passant le matin qui les a appelés car il avait vu une voiture sans chauffeur en train de descendre une rue de Yoro, au sud du Japon. Cet incident n’est pas surnaturel, l’explication est que le petit garçon ne mesure que 1m35. Les policiers ont laissé le petit garçon retourner chez lui mais ils ont demandé à ses parents de surveiller leur voiture et leur enfant de plus près.
