A boy has been injured after a window fell off a US military helicopter
A window fell out of a United States helicopter and landed in a school sports ground in southern Japan, Okinawa on December 13. This incident is likely to fuel tensions between military and residents.
Around 50 children were on the grounds of the elementary school near Futenma marine airbase in Okinawa when the window fell from a US military transport helicopter. Officials from the city of Ginowan said the metal frame fell from a CH-53 transport helicopter leaving a boy with minor arm injuries.
The US Marine in Okinawa issued a statement apologizing for the mishap: "We take this report extremely seriously and are investigating the cause of this incident. This is a regrettable incident and we apologize for any anxiety it has caused the community."
The Japanese government was critical of the incident, with tensions between local residents and numerous US military has long been a key domestic issue. Last week, a part of another US military helicopter fell on a nearby kindergarten roof, but no one was injured.
"This sort of incident creates anxiety not only among the involved with the school but the people of Okinawa and should never happen." said chief Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga.
Many Japanese residents have long been opposed to US military bases, with regular complaints raised in relation to loud noise and pollution. Residents want Futenma to be closed and a replacement built elsewhere in another part of Japan or overseas.

Environ 50 enfants étaient sur le terrain de sport d’une école élémentaire près de la base de Futenma sur l’île d’Okinawa quand l’accident s’est produit.
Des fonctionnaires de la ville de Ginowan ont affirmé que le cadre métallique est tombé d’un hélicoptère CH-53, blessant légèrement un écolier au bras.
“ C’est un incident regrettable et nous présentons nos excuses pour l’inquiétude qu’il a pu causer aux habitants” a déclaré l’armée américaine dans un communiqué.
Les forces américaines assurent qu’ils prennent la situation “extrêmement au sérieux” et affirment avoir ouvert une enquête.
Le gouvernement japonais a critiqué l’incident.Des tensions existent depuis longtemps entre les résidents et les militaires qui sont nombreux sur l’île.
La semaine dernière, des pièces d’un autre hélicoptère sont également tombées pas loin du toit d’une école maternelle, mais personne n’a été blessé.
“Ce type d’incident inquiète non seulement les personnes de l’école mais tous les habitants d’Okinawa et ne devrait jamais se produire” a déclaré le porte-parole du gouvernement japonais, Yoshihide Suga.
De nombreux résidents sont opposés à l’existence de basesmilitaires américaines et se plaignent régulièrement du bruit et de la pollution. Les habitants veulent que la base de Futenma soit délocalisée et qu’elle soit reconstruite dans une autre partie du Japon ou même à l’étranger.
