Shuri castle burnt to the ground

On Thursday evening, October 31 a devastating fire destroyed the historic Shuri Castle on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. Flames engulfed seven buildings, including the main
hall. The fire was reported around 2:40 am and the firefighters fought the flames for more than 10 hours. They finally managed to extinguish it around 11am. No one was injured in the blaze but nearby residents had to be evacuated. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet but according to the fire department in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, the blaze started near the main hall. Shuri castle was a famous tourist landmark listed as World Heritage since the year 2000. It was also known for his rich history. Shuri Castle first built 500 years ago was
the seat of the kings of Ryukyu for more than 400 years. The castle was completely destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The site was reopened as a national park in 1992. It was not the first time that Shuri Castle was burnt down. During its history, the complex experienced several fires, the last one dating back to the Second World War.

Jeudi soir, 31 Octobre , un incendie dévastateur a détruit le château de Shuri sur l’île d’Okinawa, au sud du Japon. Les flammes ont englouti sept bâtiments, y compris le hall principal. L'incendie a été signalé vers 2h40 et les pompiers ont combattu les flammes pendant plus de 10 heures. Ils ont finalement réussi à maîtriser la situation vers 11h. Personne n’a été blessé mais les habitants à proximité ont dû être évacués. La cause de l’incendie n’a pas encore été déterminée, mais selon les pompiers de la ville de Naha, de la préfecture d'Okinawa, l'incendie aurait débuté près du hall principal. Le château, inscrit au patrimoine mondial depuis les années 2000, était un site touristique très prisé, et était connu pour son histoire très riche. Le château de Shuri, construit il y a plus de 500 ans, fut le siège des rois de Ryukyu pendant plus de 400 ans. Il avait été complètement détruit lors de la bataille d'Okinawa en 1945. Le site a été rouvert comme monument national en 1992. Ce n'était pas la première fois que le château de Shuri est ravagé par les flammes. Au cours de son histoire, le complexe a connu plusieurs incendies, le dernier remontant à la seconde guerre mondiale.
